- Dear Prudence, Bite me.
Was perusing Slate today and came across this little gem:
Prudie,
Could you please tell your straight readers that when they meet an attractive gay person of the opposite sex that it is never a compliment to say, "What a waste." What does this comment mean anyway—that because the person is sexually off limits they lead no sort of life of their own? Or is it some offhand attempt to compliment the gay person's looks? I don't get it. I have often been tempted to respond with, "Let me assure you that nothing I have is being wasted; it's all being put to very good use." Thanks, Prudie.
-Out in Atlanta
Dear Out,
Prudie believes you are misinterpreting the remark. Rather than implying that the gay person has "no sort of life of their own," Prudie finds it to mean, "You are GORGEOUS." (And it's the straight person's loss that you bat for the other team.) It is meant both as a compliment and a lighthearted statement. As you may have divined, Prudie has made this comment, herself, and always to a big smile in response.
-Prudie, flatteringly
Dear Prudy,
Being told your romantic life is a "waste" is never flattering, regardless of what the intentions are. Out was not asking your opinion, he or she was stating that queer people find this insulting. Which it is. Any smiles you got were no doubt due to amusement that an advice columnist would commit such a faux pas, and not in response to any perceived flattery.
Sincerely,
Girlydyke

- Takin the X out of Xmas
Once again, the religious right is in an uproar. This time they're bitching about "the left" taking Christ out of Christmas. Gimme a fuckin break already. Christ hasn't been part of Christmas for decades. As a nation, we don't celebrate the birth of Christ. We celebrate the fact that we can go out and blow money on stupid presents for people we really don't care that much about. Happy capitalism rules day.
I understand that Christians are miffed about that. As well they should be. But no one is infringing on their right to celebrate the season however they see fit. If you want a big tacky light up nativity, knock yourself out. Wanna neon Merry Christmas sign that'll give your neighbor seizures? More power to ya. But quit with the "city hall MUST have a nativity" and "public schools MUST sing religious songs" because it just make you look like a bunch of facist dickheads. Celebrate however you see fit, but quit trying to force everyone else to do the same.

- Movin on up
Well, I got most of my furniture moved over the weekend, thanks to Kev, Eth and my folks. And I'm not even sore today! WOOT!! Course I probably won't be able to move tomorrow, but what ya gonna do ya know? Friday was indeed the first night at the new house. We celebrated with champagne, Fu-Ki wine (no I didn't make that up) and pizza. A good time was had by all. From what I remember anyways. Heh.
Tonight I'm heading over to the old homestead to clean out the fridge and freezer and pack more kitchen stuff. I'm hoping to have the whole place cleared out by the end of the week so I can spend a couple hours cleaning Friday night and be done with the whole moving thing. Moving sucks. Speaking of, if anyone wants an entertainment center or an uber cool corner desk and double wide filing cabinet, email me. They are free for the taking. But bring friends cuz they are damn heavy!
Not too much news elsewhere in life. Mom made a big ol pot o chili to feed the moving crew. Which, as I said, consisted of me, Kev and Eth. So yeah, I'll be eating chili for the next 2 weeks. All good tho, mom makes some dayumn good chili!! And she totally impressed me by remembering that Cristin's a vegetarian and makin a bowl special for my girl. Have I mentioned how much my mom rocks? She so does. Anyways, just a little note to keep ya updated. Hopefully I'll have some time to work up a big ol anti-Bush rant soon, but right now I haven't the time nor energy. And besides, y'all know he's an asshat anyways, not like ya need me to point it out ;o)
